Bucks Agricultural Heritage Area
Historic farmhouses, beautiful agricultural fields, and small stream valleys of the Central Bucks Agricultural Heritage Area are what make the name Bucks County known throughout much of the United States. This vital landscape includes the beauty of the Delaware River, the former artists’ colony of New Hope, and the charming town of Newtown.
The region is nestled between the Delaware River and the Neshaminy Creek with numerous smaller streams flowing into these waterways. The Delaware River and the Delaware Canal, which parallels the river, are key recreational resources. Three small mountains, Buckingham, Jericho, and Solebury, as well as several smaller hills such as
Bowman’s Hill, give the landscape its rolling form. In this agricultural area one can still sense the 18th and 19th century agricultural heritage that originally dominated the entire county.
Central Bucks Agricultural Heritage Area includes three state parks. Washington Crossing State Park is a National Historic Landmark as well as an important recreational park. The Delaware Canal State Park, with its intact towpath, is an example of the great canal building era of the early and mid-19th century. The 1,700-acre Tyler State Park is the southwestern anchor of the region. It includes recreational facilities for boating along the Neshaminy Creek, farmland, and a number of historic houses, barns, mills, and a covered bridge.
WE NEED TO ACT
This region of Bucks County is the most desirable area for residential subdivision. Land values are higher here than anywhere else in Bucks County. Farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to resist offers that are literally over 100 times the amount their parents paid for their properties a generation ago.
